untitled [national day]
I draw blood from my arm and use it to paint the Singapore Flag. Filmed on 9 Aug – Singapore's National Day – I think about the messiness of democracy, the problematics of “national identity”, the performance of “patriotism” and the complexities of civil society. Against the backdrop of rising nationalism, I think about the many ways to be Singaporean and the many ways to use a flag.
